Report on the Labor Day Weekend Bunkhouse Barbeque
A barbeque, by the TR Volunteer Support Group, was held on Sunday evening, Sept 5 on the restaurant patio. The menu featured: feral hog in a poblano cream sauce, shrimp diablo, grilled mixed summer vegetables, grilled winter squash with sautéed onions, rice and tortillas. Feedback from some of the 59 people who bought tickets was that the food was excellent (comments ranged from outstanding to awesome). For Labor Day, not a major cabin-filler, the crowd was quite good. In all, with volunteers and musicians, we fed about 70 people.
Midway through the meal The Bent Lovehandles (William and Brent) struck up the band and people headed for the dance floor. I think it’s safe to say that everyone on the patio had a great time.
The land raffle, for 5 acres of land put up by DB Smith, was won by the holder of ticket 54, Ms Mildred Crawford of Granite Shoals,
It appears from the early returns that the BBQ brought us a profit of around 0 (expenses were high due to the shrimp, but worth it). We got another -60 in salsa sales and donations. The raffle proceeds are being tallied (we sold a number of tickets at the last minute), but an estimate of the take for the bunkhouse would be 0 or more.
Thanks very much to: the volunteers who did a wonderful job under pretty hectic circumstances; various staff members, including the Manager, who sold tickets, raffle tickets, and helped in many other ways; The Bent Lovehandles for being a major drawing card; DB Smith for putting up the land; Jim Miller for providing the feral hog; Paul MacDonald for spending a great deal of time shopping for the supplies; and most of all to those folks who attended - we can’t do this without your support.
The consensus among the volunteers was that this was our best effort to date. Seems we are improving. Let’s hope that word of mouth brings more people to the next event.
REPORT ON BUNKHOUSE RENOVATION PROGRESS by Jack Hennessey Work has been slow, mainly due to the need to determine the best and most affordable means of leveling the floor.
We have had a concrete expert out from Highland Cement who discussed with the volunteers various alternatives involving concrete pours. A four inch pour across the entire floor would be at least 00, far too expensive. A partial pour, leaving the currently raised portion, would result in a step down to the currently raised area and would be at least 00.
After those discussions we investigated tile and paver flooring. Jim Miller picked up samples of the tiles (pavers are of the same material and the same color). Tiling and paving would entail filling the low area with a mix of sand and cement, tamping it, then tiling the level areas and putting pavers over the filled portion. This option would be approximately 00 to 00 and is close to the money we currently possess. A meeting of the volunteers will determine how to proceed. The goal would be to have all or part tiled by December.
We also need to sandblast the walls and then oil them for uniformity. The cost of sandblasting and the availability of equipment is under study. We will need additional funds to do both this and the tiling. The July 31 barbeque and that of Sept 5, along with our current land raffle will hopefully cover the costs.
We must move water, gas and electric lines to clear as much of the ceiling as possible. This will be done over the next few months as a general plan of action has been developed where volunteers will work when the restaurant is not operating to bring the electrics and gas up to the attic and down into the restaurant. The water will also be rerouted, but not into the attic because of potential problems with freezing.
We remain committed to completing these items by December. Thereafter we will need to raise funds for lighting fixtures and ceiling fans and other details, but the room should be usable before these go in. The Second Annual Bunkhouse Bash, with another land raffle, should provide sufficient funds for the lighting and other needs. Once those items are installed, the bunkhouse will be very well appointed with only some minor finishing work to be done. However, the small back room needs to be made more functional and that will take a fair amount of funding.
The BBQ’s on Memorial Day and July 31 were successful, but income from such events amounts to only 0 - 0. We have also received substantial cash donations from various people including: Steve and Chris Cobb, Roy Bahlow, Michael Davis and Alicia Gill, Jane and Jerry Brewster. If I’ve left anyone out I apologize.
More donations are needed and we could certainly use more volunteers, particularly for the cleanup after sandblasting.
